On a zinc rooftop, at the foot of a monument, or busy pecking at a few crumbs on a café terrace: it’s hard to spend much time in Paris without coming across one of its most faithful residents.
The Parisian pigeon is mainly descended from the rock dove, a species originally accustomed to cliffs and rocky landscapes. In the city, façades, cornices and monuments provide a surprisingly similar environment and have gradually become its new territory.
Today, pigeons are everywhere in the capital, and yet they have a rather unfair reputation. Often considered dirty, invasive, and sometimes even nicknamed “flying rats,” their slightly clumsy appearance hides some remarkable abilities.
In reality, pigeons are particularly intelligent birds. With an excellent memory and an impressive sense of direction, they are able to recognize human faces, remember images, and learn to distinguish between shapes and symbols. Their extraordinary ability to find their way home over very long distances also made them valuable messengers for centuries.
Photographed, fed, chased away or affectionately mocked, pigeons have shared the daily lives of Parisians and visitors for generations. Not quite as prestigious as the Eiffel Tower, nor as refined as a croissant… but probably one of the most authentic residents of Paris.
Misunderstood, resourceful, surprisingly intelligent… and unmistakably Parisian.

A NOTE FROM THE CREATOR 💌 My little Parisian favourite — I absolutely love pigeons. I find them funny and incredibly smart. I discovered the Pinpon Pigeon non-profit organization through the Instagram account of its founder, Céline. Pinpon Pigeon is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and rescuing urban pigeons. With the help of its network of volunteers, it cares for injured pigeons and those in distress, while also raising awareness and encouraging people to see these often misunderstood city birds in a different light. I really recommend following and supporting them, they're doing an amazing work.
